visual experiment 1:

sheep

2011-mixed media-variable size

in this experiment i explore the psyche that can burden a source of food and clothing with enumerable psychological, cultural, and spiritual meaning.  from surrogate sacrificial offering to a symbol for our desire to find the meaning of life, from abraham and the fortunate isaac to jason and the adventurous argonauts, sheep have played a pivotal role in the development of human history.  it is this love-eat relationship that i am interested in – this total indifference to our simile for innocence – this idyll that we pillage repeatedly without remorse – this relationship that we take for granted and use.

by positioning three monitors to face a tableau based on 'le déjeuner sur l'herbe' a dialogue is initiated between manet, donald rumsfeld, 'there are things we know we know…' raquel welch, 'one million bc' and me, 'bride', a short film about weddings.  this scene is witnessed by a flock of sheep looking on with interest and reflecting on our ongoing pimping of animals, human beings, natural resources, concepts, and ideas.
